In this post, I will tell you the surprising origin of ‘The God of Small Things’ iconic cover. Arundhati Roy wanted a water-themed image for the 1997 Booker Prize-winning novel, so the publishing team scouted locations in Kerala for the right shot.
Nothing fit, until photographer Sanjeev Saith suggested using a photo he already had, taken at the man-made pond in the India International Centre in New Delhi, not Kerala.
Designer David Eldridge then paired Saith’s water-lily image with clean, elegant typography, creating the cover that became instantly recognizable.
The result is a design that feels rooted in Kerala’s landscape but was actually captured in Delhi, a detail that’s made it a favorite example of behind-the-scenes publishing stories.
It’s now seen as one of modern literature’s most memorable covers, blending subtle imagery with minimalist design to mirror the novel’s quiet intensity
